María Valentina Tamayo, 21 years old, was born surrounded by her parents’ fashion business in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, but she had to move to Miami, USA, where her feelings for the fashion industry did not change; that’s why in 2014, she created her blog Mvtrends, where she deals with style, beauty, and lifestyle.
We talked to this Girl to Watch, who told us more about her life.
How did you start the blog?
I started my blog two years ago with the initiative to express my voice; I wanted to convey that to dress well, you don’t need to be part of that stereotype created by a society where trends only look good on girls with model bodies. I wanted to show my way of dressing and also encourage many to love and accept themselves as they are. To know that fashion is not created only for a group of girls but that we can all dress well if we know how to highlight our most excellent qualities. And above all, that self-confidence will always be our greatest ally.
Why did you decide to enter the fashion world?
My parents had businesses in the fashion industry since I was very young, I grew up in that environment, and I always knew it was my greatest passion. When we left Venezuela, everything changed, and they had to close the business. I have always wanted to develop myself in the fashion industry, so I opened my blog.
When you started your blog, were there already bloggers in the same place you live?
Of course! I started late. There were already many influential bloggers when I created my blog, and they inspired me greatly. One of them is Daniela from Nanysklozet, who had become a great friend, and Jana from OJ&Cigs, who gave me a lot of advice when I started.
How does fashion develop in the city where you live?
Fashion is art, and in Miami, art plays a vital role. I believe that in this city, fashion and style are lived and breathed. Everyone has a well-defined manner, which makes people unique, which is why it is the birthplace of many trends.
What are the most critical events in the city and the country?
On the fashion scene, Miami Fashion Week is back this year. Also, every summer, we have Swim Week. If we talk about art, there are incredible events all year long! However, Art Basel is the star of the year.
Has your blog opened the doors to meet new cities?
The blog has awakened an incredible desire to travel and see the world. That’s why I opened my “Travel” section in the blog, where I tell about my experiences every time I travel.
How do brands and designers treat bloggers in your city/country?
I love to support Hispanic talent here in Miami, especially Venezuelan talent. I work with many brands closely, and I’m always willing to help in any way I can and do my part to make their art and talent known.
What other activities do you do apart from being a blogger?
I am a Communications and Marketing student; I work part-time in a Media and Public Relations agency, am a fashion expert for Despierta America, am a flamenco dancer, and writing for a couple of blogs and magazines.
In your opinion, how has fashion developed in your city in the last three years?
Fashion in Miami has become a lifestyle that has developed enormously in the last few years, thanks to the significant influence we have from the many well-known artists that have moved here. In addition, the great mix of cultures has created styles in fashion that break barriers and have created a new aspect of manners.
